Synopsis

Arabic Calligraphy: Kufi Script

Kufi is the oldest of the six major Arabic calligraphy scripts in use today, and is the most recognized script as well. Whether on electronic devices names, book titles, bumper stickers, or store signs, kufi is the script of choice due to its almost perfectly engineered symmetry. Since the first Koran was written in kufi script, it is commonly used in decorating mosques with verses from the Koran. It is a very geometrically ornamented script and the calligrapher must not only master the drawing of the letters, but the geometrical principles underlying them. This book will examine all aspects of writing kufi, its abundance of letter forms, and its various shapes.
