About Us

Founded in 2017, the association «Embassy of Emesa» sees itself as a gateway to the culture and literature of the Arab world and its related cultures. We believe in the power of cultural exchange and free access to information and education. We invite you to discover and explore the culture(s) of the «Arab world» through our ever-growing library and our regular events and workshops. By providing knowledge and creating a space for exchange between people and their cultures, we want to start a new cultural dialogue in Basel – a dialogue that fosters coexistence, rooted in mutual respect, empathy and interest.

Emesa

In ancient times, the Syrian city Homs used to be called «Emesa». The name «Emesa» or «Hemesa» was derived from the Greek «Emesa or Emesos or Hemesa». It was chosen as the name for our embassy as a homage to the hometown of Ahmed Jizawi, founder and driving force behind the association.

Embassy

Based on the assumption that each and every one can be an ambassador of their culture(s) – actively or passively, we’ve decided to create our own embassy. However, we do not care much for diplomacy or formalities, ours is a place where you can meet on equal terms without suit or bowtie. We do not process visa requests, but we will do our best to provide you with a fresh view on other places, cultures and people.

Books

Providing access to a free library is one of our Embassy’s main pillars. Many books are written in Arabic, but books in several other languages are available as well. All of them address the «Arab world», its people, its neighbours and related cultures in one way or the other. Based on our strong conviction that everyone should have free access to education, including books, we try to make more and more books available to people who cannot afford to borrow or buy them as well as to any other interested reader.

Interested in ordering a book yourself? It’s easy. Please see our terms and conditions first, then choose your book and proceed to checkout. It will be delivered to your home free of charge within a few days.

Location

Shortly after its foundation in 2017, the Embassy of Emesa was offered a place at Voltaplatz in Basel by another organization, where the association’s first few events and workshops took place. However, it was a temporary arrangement as the building was meant to be torn down by the end of 2018. Ever since, the Embassy has been moving from location to location all around Basel to hold its events, workshops and installations – something we consider an advantage as it allows us to reach an even broader audience and build friendships and partnerships with different organizations and people. Our Embassy is a travelling one which makes it both flexible and adaptable. It can grow as big as it wants but stays rooted in the people who believe in its core ideas.

Staff

Our embassy staff is a diverse group of people with different backgrounds, interests and talents – none of them are diplomats in the strict sense of the word, but all are ambassadors of their own culture with a passion for exchange and transformation.

Our staff cannot take responsibility for all the books’ content and, more importantly, they may not necessarily reflect our ideas and beliefs. Many of our library’s books are given to us through donations. Even though we would gladly read them all from cover to cover. We invite all readers to be critical and inform us if they come across something that strikes them as inappropriate, inciting or otherwise incompatible with theirs or our beliefs.

Events & Workshops

Our events provide a platform for all kinds of artists from or interested in the «Arab world» to share their art with the audience. They are more than a simple performance, rather, the audience is invited to stay, ask questions, wonder and build connections. Our workshops involve its audience even more directly. Various skills can be learned or deepened. Who knows? They might even awaken a hidden talent in you.
